Traditionally in Spain the family gathers for a special meal on the night of nochevieja 31st December (yes...that means late, this IS Spain after all). Just before midnight they gather together to see in the New Year, traditionally eating one grape for each of the last strikes of the clock leading up to midnight. After the family rituals are over young people (and older) spill out onto the streets and into the bars and clubs of the city.
